Annual Meeting in Antwerp, 2nd December 2011

The IMS Kick-Off Conference

From the 12th – 14th of January 2011 the IMS project invited all project partners to a three day Kick-Off conference in Berlin. The Kick-Off conference started with a welcome speech from the hosting institution's Dean. Prof. Grüters-Kiesling from the Charité thus welcomed all members to Berlin and expressed her excitement and enthusiasm about the IMS project. After this Ulrike Arnold, the IMS project coordinator spoke a few words about the origins of the project and the project application. Next, Rachel Seeling, the IMS project manager talked about the content of the project and the aims and deliverables for the next three years. This was followed by introductions from all project partner institutions. Later in the afternoon our guest speaker, Dr. Rolf Peter from the HRK (German Rectors' Conference) held a very topical talk about the work of the HRK and their audit on the "Internationalization of Higher Education Institutions". Finally Birgit Heller from the Charité presented a series of project logo's and website designs from which partners were asked to select their favourite.

Day two of the Kick-Off conference began with a presentation from Ben Canny, Deputy Medical Dean at Monash University, Australia about "Internationalization of Medical education". Prof. Canny spoke about the internationalization work Monash has already done, particularly in establishing off shore campuses in Malaysia. After this the project Quality Document was presented to the partners by Koen Delaere from Brussels Education Services who will supervise project developments and ensure that the project stays on course over the three year period. Rachel Seeling then presented the project contract and necessary amendments were discussed. The morning finished with a explanation by Pierre Steuer, the project finance manager on how project financing will work over the three years. In the afternoon the two first project workshops took place. Firstly Task Force 3 (Autonomy and Accountability), represented by Prof. Claire le Jeunne from Paris Descartes University took to the floor to explain and discuss Task Force 3. After this Rachel Seeling provided an explanation of Task Force 2 (Staff Training) and made some suggestions for changes to the Task Force which were debated.

On the final conference day Uwe Brandenburg from CHE Consult presented the Task Force 1 (Quality Assurance) workshop and theories of quality assurance were presented to the group and a plan of action for the three years was discussed. Focus was placed on the creation of the quality label.
A final discussion round allowed partners to summarize the decisions and developments of the three days and to draft a concrete plan for immediate and long term action. Partners left the conference on a very good note with a feeling of realistic enthusiasm and hope for the project.
